President's Message (Geri Spieler)
Do you enjoy being a member of our San Francisco Peninsula Branch of the California Writers Club? Do you find our monthly programs helpful in several ways, such as tips on craft, how to be an effective speaker, and how to be a successful children’s book author? How about tips on creating your audiobook or how to fight the demons in your head?
I could go on and on as we have had speakers from just about every aspect of writing. Of course, that is what we are about and strive to offer our members.
Well, how do you think these things come about?
They happen with dedicated members like you who want to join in the fun of making these wonderful meetings happen.
Without volunteers, well, I’d hate to think what would happen. Nothing would happen. It takes members like you to work with the entire team together.
I have a secret to share: It’s a lot of fun. We work together, and everyone has support to fulfill the various roles. When I joined this CWC, I was impressed with everyone in the various board positions, who seemed to enjoy sharing their particular functions. At first, I was a bit shy, but the call went out, just like I’m doing here, for more volunteers to help bring about all the wonderful things that make the monthly meeting happen. I volunteered and started our first open mic with this branch. I’m proud of that.
So, I’m reaching out to you. You do not have to be an expert in anything; Just willing to help us keep this terrific branch moving forward. We train, we mentor, and we support. Let us know which particular skill you’d like to share.
Among all board positions, pick the one you would like to help out in. As it happens, we also have a vacancy in the “marketing” slot. Do you have an interest in advertising and PR? We could use your help.
Don’t be shy. Write to me. Let’s talk.

We are deeply sorry to report that Karen Hartley, a committed writer and member of our branch for many years, passed away in August, 2022. Karen wrote in many genres, including short story, novel, non-fiction and poetry. She will be missed by her former critique group, including Jo Carpignano, Ida Lewenstein, Judy Field, Karen Sundback, and Tim Flood. Our heartfelt condolences to her husband, Jim Hartley.
Our first Fault Zone: Reverse reading at the Belmont Library, July 31, was a big success with beautiful weather in the courtyard amphitheater, 40 people in the audience, and great stories and poems from our newest anthology! Stay tuned for information about our next reading from organizer Lisa Meltzer Penn.
And if you missed Lisa in conversation with sci-fi author Mike Chen about his new novel Light Years From Home, there’s a recording. “It was a blast!” says Lisa.
When he announced the conclusion of a six-year effort, Tim Flood claimed that the best two-word combination in his debut novel might be "The End."
