BOARD MEETING MINUTES

California Writers Club

San Francisco/Peninsula Branch

Members present: Vibha Akkaraju, Eva Barrows, Geri Spieler, Alisha Willis, David Harris, Tim Flood, Sue Barizon, Nirmy Kang, Margaret Nalbach, Miera Rao

1. September 2023 meeting  minutes were presented and approved.

2. Nine of our members have books displayed at the San Mateo Library and five in Palo Alto libraries.

3. It was decided that during the Holiday Party we will limit readings to stories that have been published in the current FaultZone.

4.  The February meeting will be “Members Month” and will focus on our members.

5. Margaret proposed that we move to offer two “scholarships” to members who volunteer their services at the monthly meetings and have their meeting fee waived for a period of one year. The motion was passed.

6. Tim presented a report on membership renewal. See below.

  • we stand at a current membership of 120

  • We began the renewal period with 147 members in MRMS

  • This puts us at a 81.6% renewal rate.

  • A year ago we ended up with 102 members after renewal, down from 143 — a renewal rate of 71.3%.

  • So … we did well. Plus we have been picking up members at a faster clip the past couple of months.

  • All this is pretty darn good and shows that we're running a healthy club. That means congratulations to all of us on the board.

7. The Holiday Party will be potluck and Sue will explain the logistics to members at the October meeting.

8. Megan McDonald is very generously offering a free five week course for NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month).

9. Vibha confirmed that we currently have six voting members on the Board - Vibha, Geri, Nirmy, Alisha, Eva, Tim. We are allowed a total of nine and it was decided that it would be better to have an odd number. Vibha asked Miera if she would be a voting Board member and she accepted.

10. Alisha presented the Treasurer’s report. She also confirmed that we are designated as a non-profit organization.

Amended 11/13/23: The CWC main organization is 501(c)(3), and our chapter is 501(c)(6). 501(c)(3) nonprofits are tax-exempt and eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions. Donations to organizations designated as 501(c)(6) are not tax deductible.

Nirmy Kang, Secretary. Taken:10/16/23, Amended 11/13/23
