President's Message (Geri Spieler)
There is nothing like a crisis to sharply focus your brain.
At least, this is what I’m dealing with right now. It seems our brains can manage more than one issue at a time.
Writing is therapy. We have learned that. Getting those emotional issues down can help reduce this panic we may be experiencing.
Just a couple of months ago, my husband Rick and I were on one of our many adventure travels, climbing the mountains in Rwanda to see the gorillas. No one told us how tough the climb would be. However, true to us, we conquered the challenge and began climbing 6000 feet up for over an hour. It was spectacular.
Then, we came home to learn of Rick’s kidney disease.
Our world just about came apart, and now we are dealing with multiple medical issues.
Hence, my need to journal everything. Writing has always been my friend. It’s my safe place and a wonderful, warm, and welcoming place.
Chronicling each day and each new related event helps me calm as I research the medical malady and identify my feelings about it. It helps me be a better partner with Rick as these issues are not just about him but us.
I write to “my friend” and share my fears about losing control of our lives as we move through this morass of medical disorders.
My writing wraps me in a warm embrace. It is my emotionally safe place, and I’m grateful to “see her” every day.
