Upcoming Meeting: Sat, Feb 18, 2023

This month’s speaker, Chris Hennessy, will present “Story Telling Crossover, Incorporating Video in Your Writing Projects.” Learn how and why to incorporate film/video into your writing projects, make your book into a feature film, and motivate yourself, your team, and your readers. With four national award-winning films since Oct 2021, Chris is currently writing a memoir book, Touched by Hannah, about his bout with cancer, his 1 lb. newborn Hannah, and their fight for life. Pre-register for $10 to attend meetings or pay $15 at the door. In-person only, Sequoia Yacht Club.

Writing Critique Group Support Is Here!

We are very excited that member Miera Rao has volunteered to facilitate the formation of writing critique groups for our branch. Read all about it in a special newsblast tomorrow. This is a big deal and will benefit members!

Ellen Six

The recent stirring tribute to Ellen Six was written by her friends Carole Bumpus and Elise Miller. Several of you have commented on how warm it was. Yes, and thanks, Elise and Carole!

New Member Orientation

Members new and old attended the recent New Member Orientation at the home of Carole Bumpus to learn more about our club. Another orientation will be planned.

Writers Helping Writers

On Feb 16, member Eva Barrows, freelance editor and writer, will present “Create a Newsletter Your Audience Will Want to Read” at the Feb 16 Writers Helping Writers event at the Rinconada Library. She will discuss creating a value-filled newsletter your target audience will eagerly await to receive in their email inbox.” Read all about it out here.

Fault Zone

Members will receive notices of provisional acceptance of their submissions to Fault Zone by February end. (Publication slated for October.)

San Francisco Writers Conference

  • Don’t forget the SF Writers Conference Feb 16-19, Hyatt Regency near Embarcadero. (The BART Embarcadero station is across the street.) Contact Carole Bumpus at: carolebumpus@gmail.com to volunteer for the CWC booth for a three-hour shift during the conference with an opportunity to attend one presentation.

  • Geri Spieler and Carole Bumpus are leading classes and workshops at the conference — another reason to attend. Read more on our website.

  • Two lucky members drew their names from a bowl at the last meeting: Sonya Doernberg will attend the Writing for Hollywood Summit and Jeanne Powell the Poetry Summit — free! Congrats!

  • Don’t miss Colleen Olle’s short story “Scarification” appearing in Unfortunately, Literary Magazine. “From initial draft to published piece, with quiescent periods in between,” Colleen reports, “the story took nearly fifteen years to complete.”

  • Reports Richard McCallum,The Sink, the 100-year iconic Colorado U (CU) college pub, world renown, published my ditty: The Day's of '69, on their FaceBook Sink page.” His film “Changing Dawn,” written and directed 50 years ago, is being screened at the Museum of the Rockies in Bozeman, Montana.   • Carole Bumpus was awarded a gift and farewell luncheon from the NorCal Group, after seven years of service as chair. She will continue on the NorCal Group board as a branch representative but will once again lead the state CWC booth at the SF Writers Conference. She presents on two panels: (1) "Travel as Research” on Sat, Feb 18th – 3:15 p.m, and (2) "Finding or Building Your Writing Community," Sun, Feb 19, 11:30 am-12:30 pm. And there’s this: An international travel agency has chosen Bumpus’ A September to Remember – Searching for Culinary Pleasures at the Italian Table for a Tour through Italy in Sep 2024. “Details are yet to be revealed but the tour will follow the travels (or travails) from Bumpus’ book.”

  • Geri Spieler’s Master Class, “Super Sleuthing: Internet Research Skills Everyone Should Know,” is offered Feb 16, 6:30-9:30 pm, at the SF Writers Conference. Learn more and sign up here.

  • "Thumb Boy," a poem by Marianne Brems appears in the Winter 2023 edition of Remington Review.

  • Laurel Anne Hill’s multi-award-winning novel, Plague of Flies: Revolt of the Spirits, 1846, has recently been moved from the Chanticleer Dante Rossetti Young Adult Long List to their Short List. Writes Laurel, “The semi-finals come next. Please cross your fingers for Laurel and her flies.”

  • The Birth Your Truest Story online community for writers (co-founded by CWC member Audrey Kalman) will offer a Writers' Roundtable on Sunday, Feb 05, 9:00-10:30 am. Learn all about this and sign up
